The Balenciaga Runner White is a 2021 release of the Balenciaga Runner, the silhouette launched that year under Demna Gvasalia's creative direction as part of what has been described as Balenciaga's broader "Athleisure as Armor" narrative, a conceptual design approach that reimagines athletic silhouettes through distortion, layering, and industrial material juxtaposition to create what is simultaneously a luxury fashion statement and a postmodern critique of sportswear. Hypebeast, in covering the Runner's Black/White colorway shortly after the all-white initial release, described the construction as featuring overlapping panels made from leather-esque materials, mesh, and multiple distressed components that come together for a design akin to running sneakers from the 1990s as if they've been worn regularly over the last thirty years, with stitching lightly frayed, puddles of glue appearing around the shoe, and distressing applied to the sole to give the shoes a worn-in dirty look. KicksOnFire confirmed the upper uses a combination of mesh, nylon, and calfskin, delivering a balance between breathability, durability, and luxury, while the layered sole construction incorporates advanced foam and rubber elements for cushioning and support. The intentional distressed and deconstructed elements, which contrast with lashings of Balenciaga branding at the tongue, vamp, and heel alongside a rope lace hooped heel tab, create the specific aesthetic tension that defines the Runner's identity as a luxury object that aesthetically references destruction and wear while functioning as a premium garment.
