What is the difference between round laces and flat laces?

Round laces have a cylindrical cross-section and are standard on running shoes, trail shoes, and many heritage silhouettes. Flat laces are wider and lay flush against the tongue, which is why they are used on court shoes like Dunks and Air Force 1s. The wrong type looks noticeably off on either silhouette.

Which sneaker silhouettes use round laces as standard?

Most running shoes across brands use round laces as the factory fit. Heritage trail silhouettes, outdoor running shoes, and some New Balance lifestyle models also use round laces. When replacing, match the diameter to the existing lace to keep the knot proportional.

How long should round laces be for a standard running shoe?

Most running shoes with seven to eight eyelet pairs use laces between 120 and 140 cm. Check the length of the original lace before ordering a replacement, as some performance shoes with complex lacing patterns need longer lengths.

Do round laces stay tied better than flat laces during runs?

Round laces grip each other differently than flat laces and can loosen during longer runs if tied with a standard knot. A double knot or a runner's loop knot keeps round laces secure through high-movement activity without requiring multiple retying.
